With all the hustle and bustle druing the holidays, it is often a time when children get into lots of trouble. Some holiday decorations and gifts can also be a problem. Many parents and grandparents are not aware that specific plants can be dangerous for small children if they are ingested. Mistletoe, some holly berries and poinseittia plants are all poisonous. Toys that are purchased for young children should be carefully inspected to be sure they don't contain magnets that can be swallowed or don't have small parts that can be pulled off and swallowed. Toys that have been recalled can be a problem because they may still be on the market, in garage sales or secondhand stores. Toys that have been recalled can be checked out at www.cpsc.gov which is the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Toddlers love to check out the pretty decorations on a tree and may decide to see how they taste. One idea that I used when my children were toddlers was to put the Christmas tree in the playpen, so access was not possible. If a child has special needs, the change in routine may be upsetting. This is particularly true for children with autism. Often too, after a holiday party, glasses with left-over alcohol in them and cigarette stubs may look enticing to a ltitle child, particularly if they are hungry early in the morning. So it is very wise to remove these after a party, so a child can't find them in the morning. Otherwise, nicotine poisoning or a child with a hang-over may happen. I have had to care for little kids with both of these problems.
