I have always thought of the majority of Americans as having compassion, particularly for children. When I read or hear some of the ugly comments about Jerry's Kimmel's comments about his baby with congenital heart disease, it is chilling. Individuals are quoted as saying they don't want to pay for any child's medical care. Yet, I wonder if some of these same people are saying anything about the millions of dollars Donald Trump is costing taxpayers for his weekend golf trips and trips to Mar-A-Lago? At last count, it was over 25 million dollars and that is just for a few months. The Evangelicals who voted for Trump should be particularly compassionate, since that is one of the dictates of the Bible. But if they follow the Bible, how can they possibly go along with their Republican representatives in Congress getting rid of money to care for children with special needs? The new additions to the Republican bill sound good, but many things are missing. Allowing the states to decide what to do about pre-existing conditions, not providing enough money, and gutting the money paid to schools to care for children with special needs is outrageous.
As a pediatrician, I directed six programs for children with neuromusuclar disorders, founded and directed a Center for Handicapped Children and was in charge of programs in two big hospitals for children with special needs. The pain of the children and their families was intense, but I was amazed at the courage of most of the children and their parents. I hope that the adults who complain about paying for a child's medical care never have to face some of the medical and financial problems I have seen as a practicing physician.
Thanks for information.
