Halloween can be a fun day if a few safety precautions are taken. I always enjoyed going out with my children when they were small. As they got older, they went by themselves. They always knew which houses had the best goodies! We lived in a small town, so it was safer than a big city. They carried flashlights, didn't wear masks, and went with a group of kids.
I worry when I see children out with masks on that limit their visibility. Crossing streets can be a problem, particularly if the drivers don't pay any attention to pedestrians, as I am seeing happen more and more. Costumes must always be made of fire-proof materials and long billowing costumes can trip children. Kids need to cross streets where there are traffic lights or stop signs. If they go between cars, they are risking being hit.
It is wise for the kids to wait to eat any of their goodies until they get home, so they can be sure everything is wrapped and not been opened.
One of my most memorable Halloweens was when my son was about ten. He wrapped al lot of bandages around himself and applied some red ink or other substance. Several neighbors were about to call for medical care. Geoffrey had great fun with that. I had not realized what he had done and would have suggested another costume. So no matter how careful you are as a parent, occasionally something like this can occur. No harm was done, but I think he caused a few neighbors to be quite upset! I was more careful in checking his costumes after that.
