It can be frightening for a child or even a teenager to be hospitalized. Some hospitals have staff that provide outstanding care, but sadly there are a lot that don't. Over the years, I have given parents a list of things they should watch for and what they can do.
The most important thing for a small child is to always have a family member or good friend at the child's bedside. Now that many doctors are leaving hospital care to hospitalists, it can be even more scary for a child. I always saw a child first thing in the morning and in the evening. I will never understand how any physician can allow a stranger, a hospitalist, to care for a child and never make a hospital visit. If you have a doctor like that I would find a different one.
If you are unhappy about the care your child is receiving in a hospital, I would either find another hospital or make an appointment with the CEO. Don't let any doctor or nurse intimidate you. Keep a written record or what is going one if you are not pleased with the care. Every child needs a special toy or something familiar to take to the hospital. I would also insist that your child's doctor speak with you daily. If a major surgery is planned or some procedure ordered that doesn't seem appropriate, I would request and insist on a second opinion. Hospital staff will take notice if you are outspoken about a child's needs. The squeaky wheel does get the grease! I would not be afraid to be a squeaky wheel"
